Introduction

Remi obtained his CAP (Certificat d'Aptitude Professionnelle) and BMA (Brevet des Métiers d'Arts) both in watch-making in 2014. He has always envisioned himself creating and designing timepieces that are able to demonstrate a watchmaker’s character. During Remi’s first year after obtaining his CAP, he crafted and made his own watch in his own workshop.

Idea sparked

This idea of having a layer capable of closing and opening the shutter above the dial is novel in the watch industry and is termed by Remi as “Iris”. Remi got this idea as he was inspired by the lens of a DSLR camera.  This opening and closing of the shutter resembles the iris in the lens of the camera and the iris in our eyes (opening and closing with respective to the lighting conditions) and thus its name. Remi registered his idea and this invention with the Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI). This “Iris” can close and open with a subtle inclusion of the lever at the side of the bezel, in between the gaps of the bezel and the case. He was inspired by a book written by Jules Verne titled Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea: An Underwater Tour of the World (1869). In this story, Nemo’s ship called Nautilus excited Remi and sparked him with the idea of using tougher materials such as bronze and zinc.

Continued perseverance

Remi idolised Jules Verne as Jules alone himself wrote many books such as The Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days and The Mysterious Island were some books that he liked. It is a very simple and naive way for Remi to have this thought. This reflected a lot about Remi being a very simple person. He looked up to Jules Verne as he is able to write so many books, at the same time, Remi wanted to make many watches of different varieties. Remi decided for the first time to make his own watch just for himself. As Remi rides on this journey of making more watches, he realised that many people appreciate his watch-making skills and his watches. Thereafter, he opened up his idea handmade watches for his fans.
